George Papathanassiou, PhD
Associate Professor,
Department of Geology
Aristotle University of Thessaloniki
Welcome
I was born in Thessaloniki, Greece the 23rd October 1973. I graduated from the Department of Geology of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 1996. Through a curriculum of more than fifty courses I obtained a comprehensive background of basic and applied geology. I proceeded with my studies towards a M.Sc. Degree in Applied Geology at the same university. During my studies I specialized in engineering geology, laboratory tests for the evaluation of the soil properties and landslide hazard analysis. In February 2001 I was accepted as a Ph.D student in the Laboratory of Geology in the Department of Geology of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
My research work dealt with soil liquefaction, landslide hazard assessment, engineering and earthquake geology and has been realized in the laboratory of Engineering Geology of the Department of Geology of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Articles regarding my research activity were published in international journals and proceedings. More information can be found in CV and in Publications. In addition, the visitor can be navigated through this site (DALO) into the Database of Liquefaction Occurrences in Greece, while photo-albums and kmz files of the post-earthquake reconnaissance reports in which I was participated can be found in Projects link.
From July 2018 to September 2021 and from 2021 to 2024, I worked as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Civil Engineering at the Democritus University of Thrace and at the Department of Geology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, respectively.
From December 2023 till today, I am working as an Associate Professor at the Department of Geology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki
